Mystical Woods

May 27 2026

Wistman’s Wood is one of the oldest surviving fragments of primeval oak woodland in Britain. Long the subject of folklore and myth, it is a place outside of human time – and places like these, indifferent to human concerns, have always evoked the feeling of being inhabited by something else.

Photographer Neil Burnell has been returning to this Devon wood for four years, photographing its fog and gnarled trees with a patience that shows in the work.
