The Overview Effect
& Satellite imagery

March 6 2014

Most probably I will never look down at mother ship earth from space. But some astronauts did when they set out to explore the final frontier. When they turned around they realized we were in space all along, all part of this one organism. This retrospect from an elevated perspective is a life-changing experience later called the overview effect. Watch the short film below to hear the story of the returnees.

I am fascinated by satellite imagery for a long time and I collected the following pictures over the years. It started with Space Night on German late-night TV (example video 12) when I was a teenager and the release of Google Earth was a fix too good to be true.

When we look down at the Earth from space we see this amazing, indescribably beautiful planet – it looks like a living, breathing organism. But it also, at the same time, looks extremely fragile.
