Gabor Maté
In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts

October 25 2014

Gabor Maté is a Canadian physician and bestselling author who specializes in the study and treatment of addiction. He radiates kindness and a deep understanding of the human condition. His holistic approach shows a knowing of the sensibility that constitutes our mind-body continuum. And only this is what makes real healing possible. On these grounds he also became interested in the traditional Amazonian plant medicine ayahuasca and its potential for treating addictions.

The following quote by him refers to PTSD but I feel it applies to most of the conditions we call diseases:

Western medicine, the traditional allopathic medicine in which I was trained, is really wholly inadequate in dealing with it. It does not even understand it. It sees it as a desease. It’s not a desease. What it actually is:

It’s a normal response to an abnormal situation.

I selected a few videos for you to watch:

The Jungle Prescription tells of ayahuasca, a visionary Amazonian brew of indigenous origin and its encounter with the West, as played out through the story of two doctors. The first, Dr. J. Mabit, runs a legendary detox centre deep in the Peruvian jungle, in partnership with indigenous healers. The second, Dr. Gabor Maté, is risking his reputation trying to establish a similar program in Canada. Through the intimate stories of these doctors and their patients, we see how an ancient medicine causes cathartic, life-changing insight, and we witness the commitment of people who have devoted their whole lives to applying this medicinal knowledge.
