Augustin Lesage
The voices you heard were real

July 31 2014

In 1912, the pitface miner Augustin Lesage heard a voice telling him that he was going to become a painter and he then made his first automatic drawings during a spiritualistic seance. He took up painting, guided by the spirits, and practised faith healing. From 1923 on, he devoted himself solely to painting, producing works characterised by monumentality and symmetry around a central axis. His works refer to ancient Egypt and the mysteries of different religions.
